PROTECTION OF PLANT VARIETIES AND FARMERS’ RIGHT AUTHORITY

Recognition Award for Assamese Farmers

The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Authority (PPVFRA) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture organized the 5^th Genome Savoir Award at NASC Complex, New Delhi on 22^nd May 2013. Three farmers of Lakhimpur District of Assam viz. Mr. Jitul Saikia, Mr. Manik Saikia and Mr. Suren Bora were conferred the Genome Saviour Recognition Award for their dedicated efforts in conserving and improvement of plant genetic resources. Mr.Tariq Anwar, Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food processing industries presented the recognition Certificates and Citation to the three farmers of Assam. Amongst those who attended the function were Dr. R.S. Paroda, former DG, ICAR, Dr. P.L Gautam former Chairperson, PPV&FR Authority  and important dignitaries including Vice Chancellors of  four SAUs, DDGs, ADGs, representatives of DAC, PDs and representatives of CG Centres, UNDP, FAO and delegates from a number of Centres.

All the three farmers were nominated by the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Assam Agricultural University, North Lakhimpur to the Authority for the said award considering their contribution towards conservation of Plant Genetic Resources in their locality. Mr Jitul Saikia an energetic young man has dedicated himself for conservation of Muga host plants to revitalize the sick Muga Industry in the hot spot of Dhakuakhana area. Mr Manik Saikia and Mr Suren Bora have been conserving a number of Deep Water Sali and Ahu rice varieties in their field since their involvement in agriculture. They have conserved the varieties systematically and have provided parent materials for development of high yielding varieties to RARS, North Lakhimpur.

It is for the first time that farmers of Assam have received such recognition award from the PPVFR Authority. The Guwahati Office of PPV&FRA played a vital role in bringing these farmers to the limelight in the national forum.
